Around the World Forever
Can you march in perfect unison with your comrades at 35 miles an hour? Can you kick your leg up higher than Chuck Norris and stomp it down with terrifying authority??? Then you may be a good candidate for India's BSF - Border Security Force - and your application is needed now!
Welcome to the India-Pakistan border where each day, in a ceremony of speed marching, stomping, huffing, puffing, dirty looks, and general macho-ism, the Indian Border Security Force brings down it's flag at the Pakistan border and then slams the gate in their face... after a courteous handshake, of course. Hundreds of Indian and foreign tourists flock here everyday to witness this event. It is entertaining to the point of comical. Both sides have their own DJ that blasts local music and feel good national slogans to psyche up the crowd. Women line up to run with the Indian flag up to the border fence and flaunt it in the Pakistani guards' and tourists' faces on the other side to boos and jeers. The Indian women danced in the street in a makeshift mosh pit while the men chanted something about Hindustan, referring to India's northern region. This was great fun and contrary to common perception, it is not dangerous to be here.
The next morning, I paid a visit to The Golden Temple, the most important pilgrimage sight for the Sikh religion but open to all. To say it was stunning in the pre-dawn light is an understatement. I was advised to arrive around 04:00 AM and it was good advice. There were hundreds of Indian Sikhs off-loading from tour buses even at this early hour. The buzz and energy about the place was alive. The locals were extremely friendly and surprisingly outgoing. To top off the whole experience, one must partake in the free meal they provide. Some 10,000 plates of food are given away each day at the Golden Temple to anyone who asks. I asked, and I received. Amen brotha! This place rocked!
