Saturday 26 May Santiago de Compostela. I’m at the end of my journey across Spain after taking a 4 hour train ride yesterday from Astorga. At one stage I thought I was on the wrong train after it sat in a station for ages and then started going back the way it had come. What a panic but a very nice lady spoke some English enough to say it was okay. It’s a worry when you don’t understand announcements. I got a taxi to this pension which is the sort where the owner checks you into your room and then goes home so l can hear other people but haven’t seen anyone yet. Just a little bit spooky.
I’m looking forward to seeing the old city of Santiago and I’ll go to the mid day service for pilgrims which is a tradition dating back centuries.
It rained very heavy yesterday for the first time since Raewyn and I got to Spain. Igot drenched getting to the station but poor Raewyn was on the trail as of course she’s walking all the way and won’t be here in Santiago for another 8 or 9 days so she walked a long time in it.
I count myself so lucky that we had such great weather for walking and it’s dry today. It felt odd seeing Raewyn off on her Camino yesterday without me but I’m satisfied with what I have done. I think I’ve walked about 540 kms which sounds crazy doesn’t it but it clocks up over 30 or so days. It has been an amazing, wonderful experience I will never forget and with the best companion I could ever wish for in Raewyn. Buen Camino - Jean
