We packed up early and headed into town for breakfast while Dad took the caravan to have the gas cooker fixed. It was a very small job (tightening up a nut on a safety valve) but took a couple of hours. We then set off north towards Tennant Creek and had lunch at Aileron where there are some large sculptures on the Big Man Walk. Despite the late start we make it to a campsite just east of Three Ways.

Central Australia is famous for it's camels, so we thought a trip to the railway station was in order to see The Ghan train arrive in town. Named after the Afghan cameleers the train was over 600 metres long and stretched out of sight in both directions from the platform. The Ghan is a passenger train that goes from Darwin to Adelaide. A busy morning doing the rounds of town to fix a few rattles in the caravan and catch up on some shopping. Famous for his pioneering work in Central Australia (Royal Flying Doctor Service, School of the Air, etc) we visit the grave of John Flynn (who appears on our $20 notes).

We enjoyed an early morning walk around Ormiston Gorge before packing up and heading into Alice Springs. On the way we stop off at Ellery Creek Big Hole for lunch and enjoy the scenery. A wash of the car and caravan when we reached town and then a swim in the pool and a slide down the slide to finish the day.

We get our permit to travel north from Kings Canyon on the Mereenie Loop Road to the West MacDonnell Ranges and after taping up the van head off to tackle the dust and corrugations. The road wasn't too bad although a few bits rattled loose before we reached the bitumen near Gosse Bluff, a dramatic crater caused by a 600 metre wide comet.
