We get our permit to travel north from Kings Canyon on the Mereenie Loop Road to the West MacDonnell Ranges and after taping up the van head off to tackle the dust and corrugations. The road wasn't too bad although a few bits rattled loose before we reached the bitumen near Gosse Bluff, a dramatic crater caused by a 600 metre wide comet. We arrive at Ormiston Gorge for an overnight stay in the campground and Fraser spotted a dingo while jogging around the campground. Both Mum and Dad heard it howl during the night but Fraser and I slept soundly.
