Broome to Fitzroy Crossing
Sunny, 29 degrees.
So we had to say goodbye to Broome this morning... and off to Fitzroy Crossing a four hour drive. We left about 9am.
The landscape today was at first very flat, with lots of gum trees and wattles. But around the Derby turnoff it started to change, still rather flat, but with more and more Boab trees. Crazy trees... The more I saw of them, the more I kept seeing trees from "the enchanted forest". Or as Lauri said, maybe Harry Potter Trees. You keep expecting them to have a face on them and for them to talk to you! Love them!
We pulled up for a rest and a snack at the Boab Tree rest area. This tree is huge, and must be hundreds of years old. I imagine that it could well have been an aboriginal meeting place hundreds of years ago, meet up at the big tree!!!
Another hour or so and we had arrived in Fitzroy Crossing. We had a look around town, not a lot to see really, and fuelled up again. And then crossed over the river to the Fitzroy River Lodge and caravan park. It is really lovely here. A big place right on the river, the river is pretty dry this side but on the other side there is plenty of water. There are plenty of rooms here, a bar, restaurant, pool, tennis courts. And then the caravan park, which is lawned for much of it. At first I wondered how they could have so many using all these rooms, but then it dawned on me! Of course the tour coaches have to pull in somewhere, and this place is perfect for them. With the restaurant and bar and rooms. There is a very long way to the next stop. So it all makes sense. And about 5.30 or so all the tour coaches started arriving!!
When we arrived there were no powered sites left. But that was ok, we really don't need power anyway. Have our gas and lights. We set up and more and more kept arriving. Very popular place. We had an offer when booking in of barramundi, chips and salad from the restaurant- takeaway. $15 each. So we decided to try it! Lovely meal. Really enjoyed it!
