So guys and gals, we have come to the end of our month in Antigua...and what a month it has been!! We both agree that it has been the best month so far...despite the sweat, dirt, paint, blood, tears and starvation. We have met some amazing people (Maddy we are REALLY going to miss you!!!), made some great friends and finished building 3 houses for people that you know it is going to help enormously. We have also found the Guatemala families we have been working with and for to be the most loving and warm people we have ever met. They have so little to their name, but want to give you what they have to say thank you (food and embroidered bags to be specific).
The last day of house building was another emotional one, with tears all round. Calixto, the father of the family, was probably the most smiley guy we have ever met! He would have the site prepared for us in the morning, would work solidly throughout the entire day, sweat dripping off him, but still be smiling at the end of it. Christina, the 11yr old daughter is learning to weave and made us all presents, which was incredibly touching. We are really going to miss working with them and all the Guatemalan builders who we have come to be friends with.
As a last night celebration we all went out for dinner at Vino y Queso and had AMAZING pizza...stuffed our bellies to overflowing to make up for the slight food deprivation over the last few weeks. After dinner we went to the Black Cat Hostel, and thanks to Sean for letting us drink in his hostel we were all rather merry by about 10pm and were in the mood for a boogie (Rum has that effect...). So we headed of to La Sala where there was a live band playing blues and we danced and giggled the night away like a bunch of loonies...even learning to Salsa and teaching some scottish dances in return. Though I am not sure that they were convinced by being spun round by the arms whilst drunk. Too much rum and lots of spinning makes for some very dizzy people.
Finally we headed up to Tiki Taca for a lock in where we met up with some of the other builders who had obviously had even more rum than us! There were hugs a plenty, lots of "I love you"s and "Gonna miss you"s and "Thank you sooooooo much"....etc etc. All very mushy but still heartfelt.
We finished our night with the final communal tooth brushing session. Over the last four weeks, our coincidental meetings in the bathroom turn into organised sessions (with rules apparently...though I think they were only in Maddies head)..silly head!!!
Thanks to everyone who has made this month the best ever, we are going to miss you all.
Off to lake Atitlan for some lie in´s and FOOD!!!
