Today was exhausting!! First of all we went to Hotel Santo Domingo which is a 5* hotel built around ruins. Within the hotel grounds they have tried to give you an idea of the layout and life in the monastery in the 1500s. You can go into the crypts and see skeletons of some of the inhabitants. There are also 5 museums (Candles and pottery workshops too). We walked around here for about 2 hrs then went for lunch at a tiny little place we stumbled across, which looked more like someone's house and sold the best guacamole we have ever tasted! There was no menu so we just went in and asked them to cook something for vegetarians...it was yummy!
We then started the seemingly impossible task of trying to find the tourist police office as the guide book said we needed an escort to go with us to Cerro de la cruz (A hill from which you get a great view of Antigua). Everyone we asked gave us VERY different directions, and after nearly an hr of running round the city, we gave up. We were going to give up on the whole idea when we met a 7ft American, built like a rugby player who was heading up there anyway. We figured he would be better protection against any robbers than the 5ft skinny Guatemalan police!! It turned out to be very safe, and nothing like the guide book had made out. We enjoyed a lovely view watching the sunset behind Volcan Fuego.
We finished the day in a lovely Italian restaurant, with Antique furnishings, a wood burning fire, and Ikea lampshades...of course.
