Day 32
Rainy, rainy day. We hung out at camp until 2pm. Made our way into town to see the Russian Bishop House, watched their movie and took their guided tour. The Russian Bishop House, completed in 1843 was built as the residence for Bishop Innocent, a man beloved by the natives. He allowed them to preserve their traditions and he honored them by learning their language. He did not try to force them to give up their culture, like missionaries had. During the early 1970s when the house was being restored, the remains of devil's club plants were found in the ceiling above he bishop's bed. It is thought that during the construction of the house, the natives had placed it there to protect the Bishop.
Devil's club is a pretty plant until you look up close. It has broad, almost tropical looking leaves and red berries. However it has extremely sharp spines covering every inch of its stem, and the undersides of its leaves. It is believed to have healing qualities; also that it has the power to ward off any potential evil spirits.
Made it an early night because tomorrow we have to be at the meeting place at 5:00am for our fishing trip, my first fishing trip ever!
