Day 85
Sunny, gorgeous blue sky day, high 50s. We left Ely, Minnesota, filled up with gas and proceeded on what we thought was Hwy 1. When we had driven 19 beautiful scenic miles, the road ended. We were at the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness-Oops! We missed a turn which we should have taken literally at the gas station. Drove back to Ely and this time we got on Hwy 1 south until it ended at spectacular Lake Superior.
Here we took Minnesota 61 south, driving along the coast of Lake Superior. There was quite a bit of traffic; I guess everyone was out enjoying this beautiful weather and all the parks along the lake. Made a stop at Two Harbors Light House, walked around a bit. Very pretty, clear cold water. Watched some kayakers, brrrr. Two Harbors is a really cute town.
Drove through Duluth, crossed the bridge into Wisconsin at Superior. Followed 2 East to 13 South.
It's 72 degrees and sunny. Rockin the tunes on XM Classic Vinyl. Sweet.
Stopped in Ashland, Wisconsin, a beautiful town right on Lake Superior. It was only 3:00pm but we were exhausted and completely in love with this town. The town has the most amazing murals on several of their buildings, plus the location is spectacular on Lake Superior. We looked at each other and decided to call it quits for the driving today and just relax and enjoy this place. We found a beautiful campground, on the shores of Lake Superior, Kreher RV Park, located along the Lake Walk Trail.
Set up camp, walked on the Lake Walk Trail, sat in our chairs looking at the lake, cooked burgers on the grill, made potato salad, and watched the sun set over the lake. Ahhhh, we needed this!
