Day 84
Said good-bye to North Dakota (at Grand Forks) and crossed the Red River into Minnesota (at East Grand Forks). We are still following US Hwy 2. Poring down rain, 50 degrees. Fall colors are beginning. Gas prices, at $3.29 are better than in Montana and North Dakota, where they were around $3.63.
At Bemidji, we decided to get off 2 and we headed north and east on 71 to pick up Hwy 1, so we could drive a more scenic route through the Chippewa and Superior National Forests, some state forests and end up at Lake Superior. Still raining steadily, but the road is flat, smooth, and no traffic. The fall colors are pretty up this far north, deep crimsons, scorching hot yellows and oranges, soft sandy brown colors.
XM Radio is strong, yay! College football while we drive. Go Vols, (for Michael and I) Go Dawgs and Roll Tide! (for me).
We drove to Ely, Minnesota today. Ely is adjacent to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, a 1,090,000-acre wilderness area within the Superior National Forest.
We decided to get a hotel again. We couldn't find a campground with hookups nearby and it was getting late.
