Day 27
After the past 2 days going on the bear tour, the ferry ride and the whale tour, we badly needed to take a breather, so today we did just that. We slept in and and took it easy for a bit in the morning.
Michael made himself a nice cup of coffee, sat down to enjoy it, then suddenly jumped up to spit out the first sip. "Blech, this coffee is terrible" he said. What could it be? He smelled the coffee grounds and they were fine, next he checked the Ziploc bag of stevia he'd brought, it tasted horrible, very salty. Why? Because it was sea salt. The bag was labeled with black magic marker "sea salt" but he hadn't noticed that when he put 2 heaping teaspoons of it in his coffee, haha! We laughed so hard. He made a second cup using stevia and the morning got much better.
We chatted with Marie and Ed from California who we had met on the Stikene Wilderness Tour in Wrangell. They were the ones who told us about this campground, Frogs RV. Very nice couple with a gorgeous, huge 5th wheel.
We took off for the afternoon, going to the visitors center, visited some shops, took a bunch of pictures in town. The rosemaling that decorates the buildings is so colorful and joyful. Then we drove around the island stopping at Outlook Park, Sandy Point, where we saw a little baby deer on the beach. Next we went to Northern Lights Smokeries to buy some smoked salmon. We enjoyed talking with the owner, Thomas. He ships, so if you want to get the most delicious Alaskan smoked salmon, check it out at www.nlsmokeries.com
Wow, we have found our most expensive gas in Alaska so far, here in Petersburg at $4.89 per gallon. We needed gas, so we had to pay the price, ouch!
Went back to camp, had hors d'oeuvres overlooking beautiful Scow Bay, Michael cooked hot dogs on the grill, then some new friends, we had met, came over to our site to visit. Billie and Scott from Montana and Norm and Debbie from New Hampshire.
Very nice evening.
