Day 43
Today, we spent a few hours using the wifi at Haines Borough Public Library. This is a beautiful, state of the art library. In 2005, they won the "Best Small Library in America" award from the Library Journal and Bill Gates Foundation. We sat in comfy mission style rockers, using their fast wifi, looking at the majestic mountains out of their floor to ceiling windows. Really nice library.
After running a few errands and taking a scenic drive, we went to Dalton City, which is located just outside town at The Fairgrounds.
Dalton City is a portion of the set from Walt Disney's White Fang film, filmed in Haines in 1990. The set includes a dozen small structures replicating a mining town. Today, these buildings house shops, restaurants and Haines Brewery. We walked around for a bit, until we got too cold, yes, it was a cold, cloudy day, so we went to The Klondike, one of the buildings in the set that is now a restaurant serving wood-fired pizza. We split a pizza and had organic salads with dried cherries and candied walnuts. Yum!
We have been delighted to find that a lot of restaurants and grocery stores in Alaska offer organic and locally-sourced foods.
