Rownd y Byd efo Helen a Fiona!!
Hello! well.... where to start........
From Napier we decided to visit Palmerston North, where we stayed for a couple of days! Palmerston North is a very quiet town, but that is where the New Zealand Rugby Museum is, so we had to visit. It was very interesting to learn the history, we even got to listen to Bryn Terfel (put on especially for us!) We then left the rain and set off towards Wellington....
We arrived Wellington on the Wednesday, and we are planning of staying here until at least the 3rd July, so we can be here for the Lions v All Blacks 2nd test match. We have been to the Karori Wildlife Park, where we hoped to see Kiwi's but unfortunatley they are nocturnal birds, but we did get to see a few Tui's and Kaka's! We have been driving around quite a bit which is such a great way to see the country, we had a nice drive along the southern coast of the North Island, we had hoped to see the seal colonies, but I think maybe that my map reading went a bit wrong and that we weren't at the right place...oops!!! We went into Wellington City on Saturday to watch the 1st test match, there we found a bar called The Welsh Dragon!! It was nice to meet so many Welsh in the same place, even found someone from Caernarfon! There was such a good atmosphere there, especially at midnight when the landlord stopped everything so we could sing 'Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau'! From that evening on everything became very Rugby orientated in Wellington!
We have been very lucky over the last week, as the campsite was filling up we had new neighbours, Chris & Ian Rowntree, father and brother of Graham Rowntree, who plays for the Lions and England! "Thank you Very much!!"
We were very lucky to have recieved tickets for the game on tuesday night (Lions v Manawatu) from them. We were very happy to have recieved the tickets, but when we arrived the stadium and found that we were sitting with the team and their families we were very excited!! It was such an amazing evening, all the Lions were seated behind us, I found it very hard it watching the game as I had Stephen Jones only a few rows behind me!!!!..... well, everyone were behind us, Gareth Thomas, Gavin Henson, Dwayne Peel, Tom Shanklin, Jonny Wilkinson.................WAW!! It took me a few days to come back down to earth, as you can imagine!
The next few days we spent around Wellington, you could feel the tension and atmosphere building ahead of the game, especially at the campsite, where it went from being empty when we arrived to very full, there were camper vans parked all over the place! On thursday night we went to Petone for a few drinks with the South Walians we had next door, that evening we saw Rico Gear in the bar, (the All Blacks winger). The next day we went into the City, went up the Cabel Car to see the views, it's amazing how many people are here supporting the rugby, there can't be many people left in Wales!!!
Saturday was Match day - there was such an atmosphere that morning around the campsite - everybody ready in their red shirts!!! That afternoon we went for a drive with Paul,Ian & Shamu(the whale) and got ready for the game! The sight was amazing in the city centre- there were campervans parked everywhere!!!! Unfortunatley we didnt have tickets for the match, but there were so many people around it was good in the bars!! then another rugby star! as we were making our way home we walked past Neil Jenkins, that was very exciting(as you can tell by the photo!) Sadly we lost the game and the series......
Were off to the South Island this afternoon, it's going to take us 3 hours to cross from the North to the South Island on the ferry....... Will be in touch soon!
See ya' Fi xxxx
