Rownd y Byd efo Helen a Fiona!!
Hello!! We arrived the South Island on Monday afternoon, and drove down to Kaikoura where we had booked to go on a Whale watching trip! So 7am the next morning we were up and ready to spot some Whales! Once we got on the boat and left all the fog behind us the search for the Whales begun! It was very exciting, but also a bit scary when they showed us a picture comparing the size of the Whales and the boat we were in!! We were in a very small boat..... In order to track the Whales the Captain had a radar to listen in the water, we were lucky as he could hear a whale close to us! So we went off at great speed after the whale, within a few minutes we spotted him, a Sperm Whale- he was so big, and we were very close!!! It was really good to see him so close up, especially when he started to dive and his tail came up above the water!!! That morning we had 3 sightings of Sperm Whales, saw some Dolphins and some New Zealand Fur Seals!!! So we had a very successful trip, and I enjoyed it very much getting up so close to these animals!!!
From Kaikoura we drove down to Christchurch. There we had hoped to fly from Christchurch over Mt Cook and the Glaciers, but the weather was so bad the planes weren't flying!! We stayed there for a couple of days but the weather didn't improve at all, the fog was so bad!!! We visited the Antarctic Centre in Christchurch which was fun, we even got to experience a storm around the South Pole, in a special room!! That was great!!! Due to the bad weather and the 3rd Test Match in Auckland, we decided to leave the South Island and head back up North!! Which meant that we had quite a drive, so we caught the 5.30am ferry to Wellington, the drove the whole day, taking turns with the driving, sleeping and eating and we finally arrived Auckland 6pm Friday night!!!!
Keep in touch, Fi xxx
