Since we had been on the go for two weeks, George decided he didn't want to drive any more, and we would spend this week just lazing on the beach and discovering the neighbouring area, on foot.
So we set off in the morning walking to the beach. It was not far at all, and was a very pretty beach, but it had an extremely long tide and was really shallow for a very long distance. Lovely walking beach, but not a great swimming beach. So we walked - we headed north and after a few minutes we got to Hawley Beach, which is where Faye's cousin had lived, and we had visited the first day. So we headed back and went south to discover Port Sorrel.
The resort was in Shearwater, which is a little north of Port Sorrel. It had a small shopping centre just next to it, and a larger one about a kilometer away on the main road. But the whole area was called the Port Sorrel region, so we figured this would be the largest town of the area.
We walked towards Port Sorrel on the map, partly along the beach, partly through internal roads. We found a small port with a few boats, but really nothing else. Nothing along the coast. Nothing on the main road off the highway. One corner had a corner shop and a café, so we stopped to ask.
Yes, apparently this was the sum total of Port Sorrel. There was no town as such. There was no shopping centre. There were no cafés on the beach. This was it. Apparently there were plans to build a few things down the track - watch this space. But for now, nothing.
So in half a day we had explored the whole area, and found the beach was fairly un-swimmable. That didn't leave us a whole lot more to do for the rest of the week. I think we will have to drive.
But for the rest of the day we enjoyed the pool and spa, and had a nice barbecue dinner using the facilities of the resort.
