Today is actually our wedding anniversary. In fact, our 30th wedding anniversary. I had let the fact drop a few days ago, and Faye ran with it, as she does. When we met for breakfast, I found the table decorated with various colourful serviettes, and the whole van festooned with a banner made from toilet paper, and written with mascara - that was all she had to hand.
Breakfast had to be brief however, as we had to drive off to Coles Beach ready for the cruise at 10 am.
The ship was large and comfortable, and we chugged along taking note of the scenery, the history, and the wildlife. We saw pods of dolphins who frolicked around the boat, seals sunning themselves on the rocks, and a stream of mutton birds streaked across the sky that seemed to flow for miles. There must have been thousands of them.
As we chugged along the bay area, I was enjoying myself thoroughly. However, after a time, we made our way around the southern tip of the land mass and started heading north up the other side of the Freycinet Peninsula - the ocean side. The waves were not particularly rough, but it was enough. My stomach started to churn, and soon breakfast made its way up again.
Wineglass Bay was beautiful, but I did not get to enjoy it as much as I thought I would. The name Wineglass Bay was not just based on its shape. This spot used to be the centre of the whaling industry in the area, and when whales where caught and brought in, the whole bay was red with their blood and looked like a glass of red wine. Not so picturesque and romantic a name.
We stopped for a while in the bay and lunch was served - a bento box of all the best produce of Tasmania - cheeses, smoked salmon, cold meats, fruits. It looked wonderful. Although my stomach had settled while we stopped, I knew things would probably not be good on the return journey. It seemed a waste for all this good food to stay down such a short time. So I asked for a doggy bag, so I could eat it later. The waiter disappeared for a few minutes, then returned with a sick bag - a clean one mind you. That was all they had. So I emptied my lunch into the bag, careful not to confuse it with the one I would be filling later.
True to form, whatever was left in my stomach came up on the way back. No more cruises for me, I think.
After the cruise we headed north to Bicheno, as it was not far and we were planning to head back west the next day. It was a pretty coastal town, but not as good as Swansea. Very glad we decided to stay here. The most exciting part was after we landed I was hungry - so I started pulling out bits of cheese from my sick bag. Delicious.
In the evening, being our wedding anniversary, we went out for dinner at that lovely restaurant we had found yesterday. It was as good as it looked.
