We felt we had well and truly done the Huon Valley, and it was time to move on, to Richmond. Of course we had to drive through Hobart again to get there, and it confirmed my impression that I never want to see Hobart again.
Richmond was another one of those historic towns full of old-world picturesque cottages, mostly being used as B&Bs, or small craft shops and galleries. It was similar to Ross, but much more famous, and hence much more crowded. Also, having the reputation, it was much more expensive. There was also a beautiful old bridge - the oldest in Australia, spanning a winding river.
Although it has the reputation, I think I prefer Ross. It is more down to earth, and I believe it is going to be the new Richmond.
We wondered around checking out the shops, but really couldn't afford anything here. Then we settled into a bakery for lunch, which had seating out in a pretty walled open courtyard. And what did we have for lunch? You guessed it - scallop pies. They are everywhere here.
We stayed at Richmond Caravan Park for the night, and were sorely disappointed. After such a pretty town, the caravan park was old and ugly and in very poor shape. I guess being so close to Hobart, most visitors just come out on day trips.
