Oh why did we stay out til 3am?
The alarm was set for 6.30 as we have a 9am booking for Crown access to the Statue of Liberty. Thank goodness I could cook myself some eggs and tomato for breakfast and didn't have to go in search of nourishment! Another freezing day so we rugged up as best we could and headed out to walk to Battery Park. It's only about a 10 minute walk but that wind! We made it down there by 8.30, I'm always way too early for things but I prefer that to being late! Once we'd collected our tickets that I'd booked online we decided to go back across the road and get a cup of tea, any excuse to get in out of the cold!
Back to Battery Park and through airport style security where Rodd slowed down the lines as they were a bit suspicious of his packs of Vegemite.... They actually scanned them separately! Rodd tried to engage the guy in conversation about it and offered him some but he declined with a surly "No thank you Sir". Then a five minute wait to board the ferry to Liberty Island......That five minutes felt like 15 as I shivered away under my layers....and being tired and a tad hungover didn't help either I'd imagine. The ferry only took 10 or 15 minutes and back into that vicious wind so we decided to go straight to the gift shop instead of following the hoards into the pedestal....... Good move! I found a beanie with New York and a big Pom Pom on it, not really my style but at this point I'm so cold I don't really care what it looks like!
While there was no huge crowd down at the waterfront we went down for quick photo with the city skyline, there was one other couple with the same idea so we took turns taking each others photos... It's always nice when you can get a "real" photo not a selfie (they're always bad when I take them!).
Time to take on the Lady. Once inside we had to once again show our tickets as there is only entry if you have a pedestal or crown ticket. We had to stow our belongings in a locker ($2) as you can only take phone, camera and water up and once again go through airport style security. There is a great information/museum area in the pedestal which we spent a little time looking at and then we took on the stairs! After you've climbed 188 steps you then show the crown ticket and climb another 200 very tight spiral steps all the way to the crown. I actually found the wide flights of stairs a lot harder than the tiny crown access ones. If you want to do this you have to book months in advance as they only sell 405 crown tickets per day, at $21 for ferry, pedestal and crown access I think it's a pretty good deal.
All done and I'm fading fast so a quick look in the shop for a few things, a cup of tea waiting indoors for the ferry and the ferry ride back to Battery Park. We walked back to the Hotel stopping only to grab a burrito from Chipotle ($9 and was huge and yummy).
I ate my burrito but Rodd reckoned he wasn't hungry, I can't imagine how with all the walking and climbing we've been doing and every subway station has flights and flights of stairs! Anyway Rodd pretty much went straight to sleep but I popped out to pick up the washing I'd dropped off yesterday. I also walked a couple blocks up to go to the Post Office to buy some stamps but there was only one person serving and about 20 people waiting.... I'm not good with lines so I waited about a minute and left!
We did nothing but sleep for the rest of the day... We did say we'd just find somewhere within a couple blocks for dinner but we were both just too tired, or lazy, so I had the other half of my burrito and cooked Rodd eggs and tomato on muffins (with Vegemite, no butter). I blogged all night and we were both fast asleep by 10.30! Oh well I'm sure an early night won't hurt us.
