Well because we had such a huge day yesterday we decided to have a sleep in and get going whenever we were ready... turns out that was at 1.30pm!!! In some way I felt it was a wasted day but as with our day "off" in Vegas we felt we really needed to recoup and recharge... all this being on holiday stuff is exhausting!!! I took the time to get an entry in the blog done so not all wasted.
When we finally set out the plan was to go up to Central Park.. now on the map that doesn't look too far but as we started to walk both of us were already struggling a little with aching legs and feet. We decided to go up to Grand Central Terminal ( which from this point on I am only going to refer to as GCT ). GCT is on 42nd Street around 4th Ave, our hotel is at E 39th & 3rd Ave, not too far, only about 8 min walk. From there we got the 6 to 59th/Lexington... a 5 min walk and we were entering Central Park.
Now all this sounds rather easy and to tell you the truth I've pretty much worked out which subway line we need, problem is, as I've mentioned before, I'm directionally challenged and Rodd has no clue where we're going!!! Some of these subway stations span a whole block underground so there's 4 exits... think about that for a minute... you emerge into the light... all the while being swept along by the masses that are swarming in and out of the entries and exits like busy worker bees, constantly moving. You don't want to stop in front of them, you'd get knocked over and trampled on!!!!! So you end up walking a block in the wrong direction before you can orientate yourself.... I'm slowly working it out.. as soon as your foot hits the top step ( and don't talk to me about stairs OMG there's 2 or 3 flights into and out of all the subways.. uugghhh ) you look for a wall and flatten yourself against it, map in hand to work out which way is uptown, downtown, east and west side so you are walking in the right direction!!!! Oooooo I'm exhausted just thinking about it!!!!!
Anyway............ we made it to Central Park and then guess what??? Yep ... more walking.... that place is absolutely MASSIVE..... and I have to say I was a little disappointed, first there was no snow to make it a winter wonderland for me... and next there are no signs to tell you where you're going. Luckily I had a map I'd printed at home so kind of worked out where to go but seriously you could wander through there aimlessly all day! We went past Wollman Icerink but neither of us had the energy left to have a go!!
We finally emerged at 77th Street and silly me says.. oh the American Museum of Natural History is at 72nd ( don't know why I had that stuck in my head ) well once again we walked... in the wrong direction, well not really the wrong direction but once we got to 73rd I took out the map and turns out we had exited the park RIGHT OPPOSITE IT!!! Back we go!!
Sorry.. I'm a terrible blogger... there's so many things I haven't taken photos of... like the front of the AMNH.. you'll have to take my word for it how enormous this place is.. see a recurring theme here?? Everythings bigger and better in the USA ( well better is subjective but that's how the saying goes )!! Now once again my research on TripAdvisor came in handy and Bill our greeter confirmed it for me... entry in this and many other museums in NYC is "suggested only" price, so for instance they suggest you pay $19 per adult here, and I'd imagine most people pay it, but you can give them a quarter, 25c, a dollar, whatever you want... we paid $5 each cos we thought that was fair so saved $28!! Another bargain, thanks TripAdvisor!!!
We stayed here for about an hour only, quickly went through and saw most things. You could spend all day but once again each floor had flights of stairs and we were weary!! Plus we'd dropped our laundry off at the cleaners and had to get back by 6pm to pick up as tomorrow is Sunday and they're closed!!
Yay there's a subway right at the front door of the Museum so down we go, cards are both swiping every time now.. yay!! Along comes the C train and I said "no we need the B don't get on this one Rodd".... some lovely lady turned to us and told us the B doesn't run on weekends.. what?? Okay let's get this one and see where it goes! No problem we'll get off at 42nd St/Port Authority so far so good.. walk to Times Square.. 7 to GCT... waiting waiting waiting... hmmm what does that piece of paper stuck to the pillar say?? "Due to construction 7 not running this weekend"... ok...now what?? walk?? no thanks... didn't I see a sign somewhere for a shuttle between Times Square and GCT?? follow the S signs, ask a lovely policeman and voila... shuttle to GCT magically appears. Now there's only the 8 min walk back to the hotel, around the corner to pick up washing and aahhhhh finally ... relaxing time again.
Well actually we sat down for an hour or so and then went around the corner to the Irish Pub for one drink, then next door to The Black Sheep for one drink just cos we thought it would be lame to be "in" at 8pm!! Home to cook a beautiful dinner and in bed before midnight... big day tomorrow coming up!

Debra Oh Liane that all sounds like so much fun...... from a distance! I so remember the exhaustion of walking for hours on end and the frustrations of not knowing exactly where you are and how to get there etc - at least there isn't the language barrier..... well then again.... takeaway/to go anyone?
Alison Hello my friends. What a great trip. Liane I'm just going to save for the next year and hire you as my travel consultant-you really swing girl!Rodd make sure that she doesn't walk you into the pavement too much so you can getting some of that right arm movement going. Stay well, and safe and we miss you guys heaps. Deb hope your holding up out there in the 'reach!
cafe_travel Central Park is so enormous! You should have hired bikes! That's what we've done the few times we've been in there and it does make getting around much easier. Did you get to see the John Lennon memorial? NYC is enormous isn't it. Just when you think you're getting somewhere you realise just how much further you have to go! Keep on truckin'!
cafe_travel Beautiful shot
cafe_travel Oooooo I would have given that a whirl tired or not!
cafe_travel Squirrels!! I have an ongoing love affairs with the squirrels in NYC. I chase after them to take photos and then can't figure out why they chase after me and terrorise me. Go figure!
cafe_travel There is nothing but walking to be done in NYC. It's so huge! Sometimes you just walk out your front door and feel freaked out at the sheer size of the place, but it's so exciting and there is so much to explore. I want to go back there now! xxx
