After a brief stop at Normanton to have a look at the huge sculpture of Krys the croc, we drove into gorgeous Karumba, which is split into two parts, the main town upriver slightly, and “The Point”, which is at the river mouth. We stayed out at the Point. A place of sultry evening breezes and spectacular sunsets that go on and on, forever changing and deepening in colour. We also enjoyed a reprieve from the dust and heat, relishing air con, a pool and TV reception! Up to this point, the boys had barely watched any tele, only a footy game once, and then more footy at King Ash Bay in the bar. Our plan was to stay the 3 nights to include the GF on Sunday night while we had reception.
Our first afternoon we wandered along the ‘beach’ to the Sunset Bar, a fabulous open-air restaurant/bar with heaps of outdoor seating with a broad view of the river mouth and the sunset over the water. We all had a drink but then the boys didn’t have the patience to sit and watch the sunset, instead preferring to kick a footy down below on the sand. Shame, because the sunset was superb. While I was cooking tea and while we ate we watched the original Karate Kid and enjoyed it immensely, repeating all the well-remembered lines and quotes we loved as kids.
Next day we slept in and had a delicious cooked breakfast then headed in to the main town to go to the Barramundi Centre, a new and beautifully designed centre about all things Barra. We all know they are delicious eating but wow, are they an interesting fish!
Did you know;
-
They have no teeth
-
They are all born male and turn into females!!
-
They tend to eat ANYTHING they find in the water, including themselves as youngsters.
That’s just few interesting facts.
After lunch we had a lazy afternoon reading and then went for drinks and dinner at the Sunset Bar.
Next day we decided we’d better try a spot of fishing but it was just no good without a boat. But at this point we were feeling so relaxed and lazy it was really just a tokenistic attempt, lol! After lunch and another afternoon in our books (except Ben who had a number of van/car jobs to tackle) we went into the town pool (gorgeous) and enjoyed a competitive afternoon of swimming and frolicking. Then it was pretty much time to get organised for the Grand Final. What a great game, but an unfortunate result L.
