Day 33 07/07/2013 Whale Song, Dampier Peninsula
The fact that we are located on a north-facing bay, means that we can watch the sun set and also rise. We did just that this morning, and it reminded us of home, where, of course the sun always rises over water. Once again, it was a beautiful morning and I have to say that we have been very fortunate with the weather so far. This area has received some 'out-of-season' rain, but it occurred before we got here and also when we were in Darwin.
However there is a negative to all this beach-side camping......sand flies !!!! I think I might have mentioned being covered in bites a few weeks ago......well I have to admit that that was a gross over-exaggeration compared to what I look like now!!! We have been using insect repellent, but obviously not enough!!!! It's just so unpleasant.
This morning we enjoyed a lazy time. We had a late-ish cooked breakfast, then did some chores.....there is always 'stuff' to do when camping! In addition, we had to re-pack for our cruise on Tuesday.
From our vantage point on the cliff top, we watched a group of local people wade into the water and spear-fish using traditional spears. Unfortunately it looked as though they went away empty-handed.
Around 11.30am we headed to the cafe for a coffee.......we wish we could say it was great coffee, BUT..........it was quite the opposite!!! However the views made up for it (almost!), and we chatted to some nice people.
We then headed off to Middle Lagoon. This is also on Aboriginal land so, after paying for our permit, we checked out the beach and lagoon................absolutely stunning, (although not if you are a surfer of course!). Crystal clear water, which looked so inviting that we just had to have a swim. The beach is certainly more accessible than at Whale Song. The campground was reasonably busy.......it is a weekend and also school holidays. Some sites had water views; if you didn't particularly want a water view, you could enjoy more space. It would have been a nice place to stay, and we will make a note of that, but overall we are more than happy where we are.........plus we have great water views.
Once back at Whale Song, we had a shower, followed by a late lunch. There was no-one at all, except us, in the campground for a couple of hours. Only one other campsite was in use and the occupants had gone out for the day. However after 3pm other campers began arriving and by 4pm all sites were full! There are quite a few families, so the single loo and single shower will be 'in use' quite a bit!!!
We chatted to our nearest neighbours who told us that they found out about this place on You tube..........so check it out if you are interested! Just Google Whale Song, Dampier Peninsula WA.
We had a really relaxing afternoon just chilling out at the campsite.
We lit a campfire just after sunset and cooked a chicken and vegetable curry in the camp oven. This is our last night of camping for a few weeks. Tomorrow we head to Broome and put our gear in storage again. We will stay in a hotel on Monday night. On Tuesday we begin our 8-day Kimberley cruise and then we fly back East for two weeks to catch up with family. We feel very fortunate to be able to do this.
