Day 30 04/07/2013 Broome to Cape Leveque.
It was a pretty chilly morning in Broome...really quite cool! After breakfast we went for a short walk along the beach, and then it was back to camp to pack up. We were on the road by 8.30 am. Despite all the dire warnings in guide books, and word of mouth information, the unsealed section of the road to Cape Leveque was not as bone-shattering as we expected. In fact it was overall quite smooth, with just a few short sections of corrugations. We have certainly been on worse roads. What did slow us down was catching up to a slow moving vehicle, and hence being in its dust. This is not a pleasant way to travel so we decided to stop for a coffee and let the other vehicle get ahead. This worked really well, until we caught up with it again....and we were not travelling fast at all. Fortunately we were able to overtake it, and then we were back on the sealed road...until the last 3 km into the campground at Kooljaman.....this was a very sandy section.
Cape Leveque is very popular, especially at this time of year, and the campground is full. We have one night on a powered site, and then tomorrow we are moving to a (highly sought after) beach shelter for one night. Most people book a year in advance......or so we have been told! We were lucky to get a spot, booking at the last minute, as we did.
After setting up camp we had lunch and then went for a walk. We started off on the Western beach and with a bit of rock-hopping, we were able to walk all the way round to the Eastern beach. The red rocks along the Western beach are truly spectacular....lots of photos ( too many!) were taken!! The Eastern beach is a safe swimming beach and we have been assured that there have never been crocodiles or stingers on this beach!!! After a bit of chill-out time back at camp, we decided to take advantage of the low tide and go for a snorkel off the beach. We did see some interesting fish, but of course we have been snorkelling in far better locations. Back to camp for a shower and a glass of wine and nibbles before sunset. We walked down to the Western beach where the setting sun caused the already red rocks to glow as if they were on fire ! Spectacular. We returned to the campground and headed to the restaurant where we had a booked a table for dinner. The food was delicious and we really feel as though we are ' glamping' rather than camping. Tomorrow we are back to cooking our own dinner!!!! And to top it all off we can get WiFi here!!!!!
