Day 18/33 Sarria - Portomarín
We left our “bunker” style accommodation around 0800 and headed out of town. We had totally missed quite a nice area, further up where most of the Albergues were. Lovely views from the top over Sarria. A low mist but no rain the whole day.
We were ambushed by fundraisers for the “Deaf & Blind”, bit strange and hope it was genuine.
A really nice walk through lots of forest. Stopped for breakfast at Barbedelo and then nothing else for a while. Walked with Anthony for a few kms, and he told us the reason for his walk.
Stopped at an “oasis” for our lunch - some very generous folk - seemed like a husband, wife and their tiny old Mum provide delicious treats, coffee, in their lovely courtyard to sit in (with loo facilities- essential!). All for a small donation. People are so generous.
Today we made the 100k mark - meaning only 100k to Santiago. Yippee!
Portomarín came into view with a split in the road - historic or secondary route? We chose historic. Lovely but very steep narrow decline.
Into the village with a few spits of rain and up up up to our again basic accommodation. The host very informative with good English (always a bonus for us challenged by anything but the basic English). Very basic accommodation for the price and terrible internet. The prices are increasing considerably now we are within 100k of Santiago.
Dinner in village and then the bells of the church started ringing so we went in. The rosary was in process (month of Mary) followed by mass. It was lovely and the church much less flashy than many we have been in.
Meet Eileen from CA with Michael from Germany.
