Emma & Fuzzy's Travels
Well folks, I hope you appreciate how difficult it has been for me to get some pictures up! It's cost me a bloody fortune at the internet cafe, not to mention the stress levels! However, I am sure it will get easier the more I do it.
Last nights edition of the blog was a bit short, due to the fact that I got fed up with trying to put photos up, so we decided to go for a drink instead!
I am starting work tomorrow (boo) and it is at a call centre (double boo). I went for a trial on Thursday and the main thing I learned was that it will be mind numbingly boring, surrounded by people who hate their job and are crossing off the days on their calendar until they leave. It's only for a few weeks, so I think I'll cope. I aslo went for a trial on Friday. I honestly did not know what it was for, even after having an interview on Thursday! The guy who interviewd me was the most non 'pc' person I have ever met and was swearing and calling people b****es throughout the interview. I left a little bewildered and suspected the position had something to do with sales and marketing. The guy called me up later and invited me in for a trial (not paid of course) the next day. I asked him what the dress code would be for the day and he said 'ah, sex it up a bit. You've got woman's intuition, use it!' However, I decided I would go to the trial, for the sake of the blog! So next day I went along in my non sexy trousers and blouse and was teamed up with a spotty ginger Irishman, who thought he was god's gift (he was really nice actually, it was just initially he seemed like a t***). Anyway, 12 of us left the office block and got in a minibus - bearing in mind, I still wasn't sure what I was going to be doing. An Indian chap was designated driver and may possibly have thought he was in the streets of Bombay on a scooter, judging by the was he took corners and approached traffic lights! After about an hour of driving and a lot of 'banter' we arrived in a place called Kellysville (I think it's neighbour was Hickesville). Everyone jumped out of the van with a map and a designated area and I decided that we were either going to talk to the people about god, or try to sell them something. That's right, I was a door to door salesman!! I followed the Irish boy around for 5 whole hours, going from door to door and back again in the scorching heat, wihtout a break and for no cash! I must be crazy. It got dark around 6pm and it was really quite spooky. There was nobody walking around (except us) and only a car every half hour or so. Irish boy let me have a break at about 7 and said he would collect me in ten minutes. After about 20 minutes I started to panic - I didn't know where I was, there was just creepy Stepford wife type houses all round me and there was definitely no public transport within a good 2km radius. I phoned Fuz, who offered some reassurance, but he clearly also thought it was a bit odd. He told me to call him in 20 if there was stil no sign of Irish boy. Just as my imangination started to go into overdrive, Irish boy wandered along the road. Phew! So we continued walking, chapping on doors and talking about sales until 8pm. He only managed to make one sale, so I imagine he will living on baked beans for a while. We then got picked up by the minibus and taken back to the office, where I was offered a start on Monday! I was kind of swept along with the whole thing so I accepted the job and was even talking about career progression within the company! I am such a walkover at times! anyway, having thought about it realistically and after Fuzzy reminding me that I phoned him during the trial and told him it was the most soul destroying (not to mention the nick of my feet) thing I had ever done, I have decided to withdraw from the position and go with even more mind numbingly boring telesales. The advantage of the telesales is that you get paid whether you sell or not. And like with all sales and marketing I will be working in a really 'fun and funky' team. Woohoo, I can't wait...
Yesterday we went to Manly for a look. You have to get the ferry across which takes about half an hour. Manly has a gorgeous beach and yesterday we were being entertained by the surfers - great to watch, especially if they are able to stay on their boards for longer than 6 seconds. It had lots of lovely places for eating and nice shops to browse. We came back early evening and I gave James a phone to wish him luck for his travels - we'll be seeing him and Ange soon! Back at the hostel a young Korean chap and I started chatting. He introduced himself as Gerry, so i said 'Hiya Gerry' and he said 'no, it's Gerry' and i said 'Gerry?" and he said 'no, like Tom and Gerry'. You get the picture - there was a language barrier! However, a couple of glasses of wine later and the barrier was no more! He had some of our pasta and said he will cook noodles for us. I was at the point of inviting him along on our travels and also of giving him English lessons, so i decided I had had enough wine and sent myself off to bed!
Anyway, I'll keep you all posted with the work shenanigans and see if telesales really is as much fun as they say - I suspect not!
Loving the message board, keep it comingXX
