Hi from 80 Mile Beach Camping Ground where we arrived on Friday. The cover picture shows some of the beautiful shells that can be found on this beach and if you compare then to my foot at the bottom of the photo you can tell the size of them.
After cruising south from Barn Hill camp we travelled along some very straight roads through mainly very dry scrubby country and open plains where you can see for miles with what the Auzzies call grass on them. It really is strange to drive so far and there is nothing no towns or shops and very little traffic. Another 9km red dusty heavily corrugated side road found us at this very popular camping ground right on the coast. This camp is really well laid out and tidy with good facilities and a few rules but it makes for an enjoyable stay. The beach is amazing and is covered in shells which really is a shell collectors dream and with the tides ranging from 4 to 8 metre depending on the moon always looks different. We usually have at least one good long walk along the beach even though it has been windy for the last few days but that's not too bad as it's really quite warm and needed when the afternoon temp is around 29. We are told after a storm you can find the big shells on the beach but they don't last long as there is always people collecting shells everyday.
There's lots of people fishing along the 220km odd (140miles beach) we don't know where the name Eighty Mile Beach came from and 4x4vehicles can be seen for miles along the beach in either direction. Some of you may find it interesting to Google Earth some of the places we are at on the coast it gives more of an idea of where we are.
One of the main fish caught are types of salmon plus a lot of types of sharks which are all taken to eat so swimming is not advised or at your own risk !
The days have been very relaxed with nice walks and plenty of reading outside in the shade. Today Monday we had planned to move on but as the wind was strong and we didn't know what driving would be like we decided to stay for another day in this great camp. It just means we have not been near a supermarket for a while so stocks are getting low, however there is a shop here with the basics. Stephanie liked the chance to catch up on the washing which dried in about 15mins. Its fantastic having no set time frame or places to be for bookings etc.
The water supply here is bore water which tastes ok but feels different.I can not do a thing with my hair, err well I'm sure that would be the case if I had any! It's still sunny and very warm here although we have heard from people heading north that it has been cool with rain down south so no hurry.
Every evening people take their chairs over to the beach and watch the magnificent sunsets but they are quite hard to photograph as they are so bright. Not sure where the next stop will be it was going to be Port Hedland about 250kms away but we have been told of a couple of nice places between here and there so who knows.
