The highlight for today was to be a ride on the Flamsbana, the steepest train ride in the world. Starting in Flam, over a distance of 20km, the track rises 864 metres, sometimes at a gradient of 1 : 18, to reach the station at Myrdal. It requires an engine at the front and another at the back to complete the journey in about an hour. Scenery was stunning as we made our way upwards. Waterfalls, rushing rivers, towering cliffs. We were treated to it all. Returning to Flam we had a quick lunch and then readied ourselves for the drive to Bergen of about 3 hours. Or so we thought. When we plugged into Google maps we discovered that the road was closed and the detour would take 6 hours. An 8pm arrival into Bergen was the last thing we wanted but that was the only choice. Twisting Rroads, countless tunnels, plus some rain made for a very long and tiring drive. A small consolation was that we got to drive through the world's longest road tunnel, all 24.5kms of it. When we woke the next morning we did have some good news. We were about 50 metres from the funicular and and a short walk to the historic Bryggen waterfront. We made the most of our very central location and spent a relaxing day exploring the neighbourhood.
