More rain as we headed off this morning. Today was basically a day of driving, however with a slight detour we would be able to see the best preserved stave church in Norway. Once again our good fortune held out as the rain stopped almost immediately we arrived. The church dates back to 1200 and is in amazing condition. We were able to go inside and were surprised at how small it was, maybe 40-50 people standing. From here we continued south. We opted to avoid the world's longest road tunnel, 24.5kms, and instead take the tourist route across the mountains. Very narrow, twisting road with numerous passing points built in, and boy were they needed. But the scenery was spectacular. Waterfalls, rain forest, touring trees and then we hit the plateau across the top. Very barren, huge natural lakes, running water wherever you looked and huge drop off from the road. The Norwegians don't seem to be overly fussed about installing guard rails, so staying on the bitumen was paramount. We were both almost Speechless with what we were seeing and so glad that we had foregone the tunnel for this. Our accommodation in Aurland was an old hotel that had been rejuvenated, and sitting right on the edge of the fjord, we were blessed with an amazing view.
