Day 30. Up very early as we are going fishing off a boat in Shark Bay out of the small tourist centre of Monkey Mia on the other side of the peninsular. Garth is our skipper and we have 9 fisher hopefuls. We motor up past the red sand cliffs of the Peron Peninsular to a couple of fishing ‘hot spots’. They must be good as Garth makes us hand over our mobile phones so we cannot track the exact location with gps! Many turtles surface around us for a quick look then dive. A couple of early fish caught being pink snapper and cobbler. The wind starts to blow and the waves become very big so after 5 hours we head for home, seems a long way back to Monkey Mia. We arrive safely and in time to see a few wild dolphins cruising up the beach. A quick drive 23km back to Denham we then head back down the Shark Bay road about 50km and detour into Nanga Bay Resort for the night, formerly an old sheep station but now called a ‘resort’, something stuck in a time warp from the 1970s. But it’s comfy for the night and Keith the caretaker looks after us and his boss the owner, an old Singaporean lady who has flown in to sort out the books! Beers on the veranda of our cabin, then we cook up some pan fried pink snapper for a feast. Warm today but very windy 21 degrees.
