Day 28. We are driving up through the Francois Peron National Park today for a day’s sightseeing and fishing. At the old Peron Sheep Station we deflate our tyres to 25 psi as we are driving on soft sand. 18km later we arrive at the beautiful Big Lagoon on Shark Bay after a bumpy slippery ride on a red sand bush track across the huge scrubby sandhills. The views of the sandy blue water with a deep blue channel against the red cliffs and red sandhills provides a real ‘Wow’ factor. Beyond is the sanctuary zone, another sandy lagoon for fish and turtle breeding. Fishing into the deep channel we meet young Vincent 10 years old and his uncle from Geraldton. ‘Vinny’ as he likes to be called becomes our next best mate during the whole day we are fishing at the Big Lagoon. Despite looking promising we catch nothing all day so decide on a quick swim and a snooze on the sand, so relaxing. Walking along the beach and sandhills for photos is pleasing enough for us. This beach has unusual black cockle shells instead of the usual white. Heading back across the sand hills we follow the narrow track on dusk without incident and inflate the tyres before arriving back in town. Quick showers and down to the pub for a beer and dinner. Distance today 60km, warm and sunny 26 degrees.
