Day 31. A comfy night at Nanga ‘Resort’ and after breakfast we head off further south down Shark Bay road, past Hamelin Pool and onto the North West Ocean Highway towards Geraldton. We are starting to see sporadic wild flowers and many acacia bushes in yellow flower. Passing over huge red scrubby sand hills for hours on the bitumen, then suddenly something amazing as we see green fields of wheat and water in puddles by the side of the road and large gum trees! Such a change from the dry arid deserts, sand hills and arid coastal plains we have travelled through over the past month. Turning off the highway we head towards the small coastal town of Kalbarri for a couple of nights. In the Kalbarri National Park we detour into the magnificent deep red gorge formed by the Murchison River as it heads to the coast, the second longest river in WA at 620km. Photos in the Natures Window overlooking the gorge we dodge the many tourists for several walks where we see wildflowers and orchids. Arriving into Kalbarri town mid afternoon we check out the river mouth and wild beaches for possible fishing spots tomorrow. Distance today 390km, mild and sunny but windy 21 degrees.
