Day 37. We depart Muchea and farewell Trevor and Susie thanking them for their tremendous hospitality. We drive further south in the pouring rain and detour into the Darling Ranges, the hills behind Perth. At Mandaring Dam we walk on the old dam wall and view the old coal burning pumping station. This large water storage still supplies water to Kalgoorlie over 600km away through the Golden Mile pipeline. We drive down the windy road through wooded hills into busy Kalamunda and onto the very green Swan River Valley, stopping at the at the old heritage town of Guildford. At the information centre we plan our visits to some wineries. First stop Ugly Duckling Winery for lunch of a cheese platter and local pies in the vineyard. Next we visit the large Sandalford Wines with its beautiful gardens where we try some top quality red and white wines. Then down the road we visit the historic oldest winery in the region Houghton Wines circa 1837 to taste some more quality wines. A fabulous wine museum and art gallery here. Finally we visit the nearby Whispers Chocolate Company for chocolate tasting. I buy my favourite dark chocolate covered liquorice logs, yummy! Tonight we are dining at the Rose and Crown Hotel in Guildford circa 1831, the oldest operating hotel in WA and the 2nd oldest pub in Australia. A maze of rooms, cellars, beer gardens and dining options, all beautifully restored. Lots of people and an open fire and musician, obviously a favourite venue for the locals. Distance today 100km, mild and heavy rain showers 20 degrees.
