Days 7 & 8. Two very long days crossing the Nullarbor Plain from Ceduna towards Norseman WA. A detour into Fowlers Bay to walk on the very long jetty, whales spouting in the distance. Huge sandhills behind the village, this is where explorer Eyre started his epic journey across the flat Nullarbor in the 1860s. We stopped at Nullarbor Roadhouse for coffee, then Head of Bight to watch some whales playing with calves and the Bunda Cliffs, and other stops to view the magnificent rugged landscape and vast Southern Ocean. Stopping the night at Border Roadside Village, we had a nice pub veal schnitzel meal before early to bed. Distance today 640km.
Up early next morning for the long haul to Fraser Range Station at the end of the Nullarbor. Rained a little overnight, very cool as we crossed the border and the mandatory quarantine check. We are now in Western Australia!
First stop Eucla and drive down to the old 1880s telegraph station and town now almost completely swallowed by sandhills. A stop at Cocklebiddy Roadhouse for toasties and coffee, then up over the Madura Pass, beautiful scenery. Off the road into Fraser Range Station, the first station established on the Nullarbor around 1860. We are staying in the Stone House, old shearer’s quarters. Dinner tonight around the indoor fire is a hotpot, chatting with other travellers. Distance today 600km, fine 17 degrees.
