Day 29. This morning we are visiting the Shark Bay World Heritage and Discovery Visitor Centre in Denham. But first lunch at the Denham bakery nearby. The Discovery Centre has a fabulous display on the rich history and natural world of Shark Bay. From the Dirk Hartog first European visit to Australia in 1616 to the visit by Willem de Vlamingh in 1697, the visits by the French in 1772 and 1841, British military encampment in 1850 and finally Australian pearlers and pastoralists in the 1860s. We watched a very interesting film narration on the tragic sea battle between the light cruiser HMAS Sydney and the German raider Kormoran in 1942, including deep sea 3D imagery of the actual wreck sites down at an incredible 2,500 metres. Loss of life on the Sydney of 645 being its total crew. Also a beautiful display of large photographs of the Shark Bay Area taken from above. Late afternoon we drove out to the old Peron homestead for a quick dip in the hot artesian bore. On the way back to town we detoured to fish the channel that leads from the Indian Ocean to Little Lagoon. Small shovel-nosed sand sharks swam all around us as we stood ankle deep in the water. Just fantastic! An emu with 5 chicks loitered ahead of us on the way back down the channel. Dinner tonight wood-fired pizza with a red wine down near the town beach. Cloudy and mild 23 degrees.
