Yesterday, although just another ordinary Tuesday at Hof Wegwarte, was a really good day for Ryan and me. The morning started out with Ryan and I going to see Rosie, the donkeys, and the sheep for our bi-daily visit. We brought Mike and Hefe (donkeys) a small apple each which they thoroughly enjoyed. When we returned to Oberbierbronnen, the blanket of fog that was present during breakfast was starting to lift and it turned out to be a bright and sunny day. While Ryan was outside laying stones around the house, I spent most of the day with Eliane in the cafe. In the morning, we made quitten (quince in Engligh) jelly and then quitten-apple in the afternoon. The juice we used to make the jellies was that in which Ryan had hand pressed on Saturday. I had a big glass of both types of juice and of all of them, the pure quitten was my favourite. It not only had the sweet taste like apple juice, but also a slight sour-tart flavour which was a good surprise (for me anyway...Ryan prefers the pure apple).
After 2 rounds of marmalade making, there was the afternoon tarte break and then I spent the rest of the day weighing and preparing teas. I know it does not seem that exciting, but I quite enjoyed myself. I think the fact that my cold is almost gone also contributed to the happiness I felt yesterday. Ryan and I learned something else yesterday...1989 was a better year for wine making than 1988. Martin made the fantastic suggestion to crack open a bottle of 1989 wine last night which is my birth year. The three of us enjoyed it immensely as we relaxed and watched a movie. Dessert was a very stinky French cheese to accompany the wine which we ate with bread...now that is my kind of dessert!
Yesterday Ryan and I also learned that we are not going to be the only Canadian’s here anymore either. Another WWOOFer is going to be coming earlier than expected and he happens to be from Montreal!
