Today Ryan and I used a laundry-mat for the first time ever and it just so happens that it was in Germany and we got to sit drinking Erdinger Dunkel (fantastic dark beer) while waiting for our clothes to be cleaned. This morning we spent touring around Trier, a beautiful town with a lot of Roman history. At the Dom (church) we got a picture of Ryan with his homeboy Jesus. The Dom was actually quite beautiful - the architecture was awesome and the walls were filled with sculptures. We also went to the Basillica which was HUGE and had beautiful gardens with statues lining the pathways. My favourite thing was the Porta Nigra (Black Gate) which is the largest and best perseved gate of the Roman empire.
We went to a grocery store and I think I had more fun there than in the church...foreign foods are so exciting! Tonight we went out for something which is local to Trier called Veiz. We actually combined two German traditions into something which we have now called Greg's Meal....let me explain.
Part 1: In Germany, a very common combination to have at a cafe is Kaffee und Kruchen which means coffee and a cake
Part 2: In Trier, a drink which is local to the region and currently in season is called Veiz. This is similar to Apfelwein (apple wine) in Frankfurt. Viez is basically fermented apples. The drink itself was quite sour however both Ryan and I enjoyed it (which was surprising to the locals). The best explanation we could come up with for how it tasted was a flat cider (like Strongbow).
So, here is how Greg's meal came about. Ryan and I went to a cafe and instead of having Kaffee und Kruchen, we broke tradition and had Viez und Kruchen (homemade chocolate cherry cake to be exact). Since one of Greg's fav beers is Strongbow (close to Viez), and he eats cake, we called it Greg's meal J
