August 31
On a beautiful day, we elected to play golf here in Madison. We played at Yahara Golf Course, which was quite lovely. Didn’t play well at all, but had a great time regardless. Afterward, stopped at the Convention Center downtown which had been based upon a design originally created by, guess who, Frank Lloyd Wright back in the 30s.
The plan for the evening was to seek out some musical entertainment. We found that there is an outdoor jazz concert called “Live at Five” every Wednesday during the summer at a location next to the Veterans Affairs Center quite near the capitol. Must have been 700-800 people in attendance. It was great music. Click on this image for a video.
Afterwards, we walked over to a restaurant we had noticed the night before called “Tempest”. Had a very fine dinner, then back to the Inn for our final night here.
September 1
Another lovely day as we departed from Madison. It was about a 70 mile drive to Milwaukee, where we experienced the first seriously bad news of the whole trip so far. As we pulled into the Lake Express ferry terminal, we were told that the trip was being cancelled because of severe conditions on the lake due to windiness and excessive choppiness.
This left us with no choice but to drive 80-90 miles south in the direction of Chicago, then into Indiana and finally into Michigan, so as to go around rather than across Lake Michigan. This added several hours to the trip, but we finally arrived at our destination of Traverse City around 9 PM.
We checked into our delightful condo, but more about that later.
