The few days we spent in Isla Holbox off the north coast of Mexico was our first real experience of the ´wet season´. The mornings are almost always beautiful blue skies and very hot, and then almost on cue everyday about 3pm the clouds come in and you get a spectacular lightning show, with booooooming thunder and lots of heavy rain. After a 6 hour overnight bus journey, we arrived at the town of Chiquita at 5:30am Saturday morning. Then jumped on the ferry at 6am to take us to Isla Holbox, an island off the North coast of Quintana Roo state within the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Visited old hacienda today (massive colonial house, factory and previous Hennequen (cactus) plantation). It has been left to decay since the plantation was shut down in the 50s, with just a few additional beams put in place to shore up the structure. Back to the familiar town of Merida, chilling out and awaiting our elusive parcel from the uk.........which appears to not be getting through the mexico postal system.. Two more days and we have decided to cut our losses and move onto Isla Holbox on the north-east coast. In the meantime we shall maybe explore some more sights around the area!
