So our time in Mexico is at an end, here are our observations:
1) Mexicans are super friendly, love to stay out late just sitting in the town squares, just kinda sitting there watching the world go by, which is nice to see - I guess the weather helps in this case
2) The food is amazing, we will try and make you some of the food we have tried when we return. The local drink is Sol, so not much different from home (although tastes better when drinking in the sun!)
3) They love to give people pointless jobs, very generous I know but it is rather amazing. For example if you buy a drink you have to ask one guy for the drink, he takes the money, gives you a reciept, you take it and hand it straight back to a guy standing next to him, who then gives you a drink with the previous guy just standing there - thats all they seem to do. You are either a money taker or a drink giver, never both.
Also if you buy a ticket for a maya ruin, you soon find out you cannot get in, you are directed to leave the long cue to get another ticket (at more cost) and then queue up again........you think its cheap then suddenly the price doubles and you end up with two tickets - this has happened at every ruin we have been to and no one seems to know why they dont just give you one ticket at the start at the full price?
4) Every shop, no matter what it sells has music blasting out at full volume with a dj standing at the entrance with a mic shouting out the latest offers. The most random one was the local pharmacy, very hard to ask for stuff when they cannot hear what you are asking for. Could go very wrong very easily!
5) Supermarkets are interesting, not only do they blast out loud dance music throughout the store. For some reason they have two rows of check-outs, so you queue for the first one as it is normally a shorter queue. But you get a constant stream of people pushing past you to get to the next one ahead, with no room for more than one line of people it all gets abit crazy. And when you finish you have to fight your way through the second row of check-outs and queues....which causes massive congestion! Why not have one line of checkouts?
6) Dave has a new favorite sweet. Which are called 'Choco-ritas'. Emily is not impressed at his insistance of always going to the shop to buy them. However, Daves argument is that he is doing a positive thing and improving the Mexican sweet economy.
7) We have donated more blood to the Mosquitos than to the Uk National Blood service, and they give you no cookie afterwards which we think is rather rude.
8) Mexicans LOVE speed bumps, you think England is bad....well we have nowhere near the same passion for them as Mexicans do. They are pretty much every 10 or so meters. And what is really odd is that they even occur on their motorways.
9) Worrying, we are starting to get a taste for dodgy dance music, it is everywhere here and we are starting to really enjoy it. Must get our ipod out and get some oasis or beatles going on to get me back on the right track.
10) All the bad news you hear back home about the dangers of Mexico? Well we saw none of that, only lovely, friendly, always helpful people
The photo is of our last night in Mexico. At 'Mama's House b&b' in Tulum, where Mama put on a bbq for all of us.......which was very nice of her and typical of the Mexican people in general. Was sad to leave.
Well, Mexico is done, we are due to cross the border into a new country called Belize (a country I didn't know existing until about a year ago)
Lets see what Belize has to offer.
Thanks for all your comments and messages, we are reading all of them and are very pleased that you guys are taking time out to check on our progress!
The journey continues...........
