Visited old hacienda today (massive colonial house, factory and previous Hennequen (cactus) plantation). It has been left to decay since the plantation was shut down in the 50s, with just a few additional beams put in place to shore up the structure. The house is still very beautiful, with massive ceilings and breezy balconies. All the furniture is as it was, including amazing writing desks, guns (and a few dead birds).
We were the only visitors, so we got a personal tour from an old dude who knew everything about the place. The cactus fibres they produced, were known as 'green gold' - so lucrative that they made the Hacienda owners powerful people in the Yucatan.
During our personal tour the old dude took us to a house where a local family make fresh Tortillas while you wait (see photo of ours coming out) Emily waited for orders while Dave was questioned by the Mexican Police!
