Port Hedland
The journey is reasonably uneventful and the countryside gradually leaves the red Pilbara hills behind and goes into the flat lands as we rejoin the coastal highway just after a short heavy rain storm. However, after such a smooth ride to town, why has the front edge of our oven come off??
A town totally focussed on getting iron ore from the trains and onto ships and sent to China. It is not inspiring in any way, looks unplanned and a mess, is noisy and untidy and apart from the impressive 24 hour operation at the docks has not much else to it. There is at least a small shopping centre for us to stock up, but with many noisy aborigines in the car park stocking up for their nightly booze intake. The campsite is mainly devoted to temporary workers, and is also a mess, though we manage a good BBQ at the camp kitchen, but the noise of early morning workers going off doesn't lend to a good nights sleep.
The roads are being altered and to leave the town we are told to "go up this road and turn left by the burnt out car".
We manage just one photo at Port Hedland, and that is the burnt out car. That just about sums up our view of Port Hedland, but it is a major contributor to the Australian economy.
