Carnarvon
A reasonably gentle drive to Carnarvon ended up with a closed road and detour signs sending us and other confused travellers round in circles and driving around the airport car parks and runway. Eventually escaped the trap and found our small friendly campsite that we were aiming for. Immediately set off for the one tourist attraction in the town of a mile long jetty jutting out into the Indian Ocean, which of course we had to walk to the end for sunset and moonrise. A bit gusty and the sea had quite a swell. Built over a century ago to load and unload cargo ships it is now a little worse for wear and there's a couple of holes to watch out for. Still a pleasant stroll followed by a meal at the local pub. A bit basic, but good tucker.
A very noisy neighbouring aboriginal household, shouting and arguing much of the night keeps angie awake, but by far the best showers and toilets we've had to date plus a really nice helpful receptionist make the stay very pleasant.
Next day we go north up the coast to Quobba blowholes which were OK but not particularly inspiring. The coastal scenery is very rugged and has its own beauty. Around the headland we find a very rough and ready area used for camping, which we would have stayed at if we'd brought the camper. There was also a very beautiful shallow bay containing coral and lots of fish. Even I can cope with this level of snorkelling though I do feel a bit daft going in with a T-shirt and cap to keep the sun at bay. I still remember getting sunstroke 40 years ago when snorkelling for some hours on a dull day and will not make that mistake again (I hope)
After a bit of exploring further up the coast, we return to the same spot and notice the blowholes are a bit more dramatic, probably because the tide is now coming in. With her keenness to get something quickly on her Facebook page Angie takes her iphone to take a photo and proceeds to drop it on the rocks. Screen smashed. Disaster. It's been the only phone that has worked reliably and also enabled us to get on to the Internet. Spirits are not good driving back to town. Communications have proved a bit difficult to date and now they're going to be more difficult. We'll have to see what Carnarvon telecommunications has to offer tomorrow...not hopeful looking at the town.
