Fitzroy Crossing
More stress before leaving Broome as we once again blow two more fuses on the car for no apparent reason as we simply hitch the trailer to the car. Do we take the risk to continue.......yes we do.
Fitzroy Crossing is a surprise, a beautiful campsite with a lovely restaurant to celebrate Jenny's birthday on the 16th. A swimming pool is most unexpected and refreshing after the hot day.
The old crossing which was always flooding has been replaced in the 70s by three new bridges and opened up the area massively. it must have been fun at the old crossing which now has an aboriginal art 'gallery' and a tin shack where they occasionally show films.
A boat ride up the Geike Gorge is fabulous and relaxing after we'd also strolled a few kilometres up the gorge. More beautiful yet different scenery and wildlife, freshwater crocodiles in abundance.
A trip to Mimbie caves the next day is our first really big disappontment. charged $80 for a 3 hour tour round some caves with an aboriginal telling us the history. The main man isn't there as he's gone to a funeral and is replaced by a young couple, who do not really know much history and only want to do a 2 hour tour. He's a modern man who has worked in a diamond mine and seems a little cynical about the old ways of birthing caves and hand drawn pictures of snakes, rainmen etc. He is more amused about a German couple who camped in the gorge/caves for a year without being detected and made a chess set in a small cave. Ah well the cave is interesting and I thank the hard hat as I bang my head on the roof several times.
Some of the best birdlife on the trip so far. Brolgas, Bee eaters, Bowerbirds etc
