Today was somewhat different as we decided to move on and just see where we got to. A leisurely breakfast and pack up saw us on the road to our last gorge view known as the Z bend and there are no prizes for guessing why it's called that. As an aside, Angie is most concerned about the misuse of apostrophes on all the National Park signs (note to John Watson, though he has just retired, and is no longer at the department that runs the parks)
Next we take a slight diversion to the Hutt River Province just for interest. Back in the 70s when I was in Perth, there was much news prominence given to a Leonard Casley who didn't like some of the agricultural quota changes and rules being brought in by the Aussie government so decided to secede. When you are a very remote large (bigger than Hong Kong) homestead many thousands of miles from the source of power, it must have been very tempting, but was seen as a tax dodge by many. He was obviously taken to court by the authorities but has stuck to his guns, using all sorts of tactics including declaring war at one point and then a within a couple of days calling the war off, and using loopholes in the various laws. He proudly now displays the Australian tax assessments that declare him a non-resident of Australia! Anyway It is just a simple run down homestead, but Prince Leonard as he calls himself, is there to greet us and proceeds to show us a motley collection of gifts from various countries and organisations. He also professes to be doing scientific research and quotes Fibonnaci's series and a number of other things, which seem very far fetched but who are we to argue. A strange little man who was just watering his plants with a hosepipe as we escaped back on to the dirt road.
We decide to go bush tonight and not stay at an official campsite so spend our first night in a free roadside stopping place next to the river at Galena Bridge. Makes for an interesting evening though there are millions of mosquitos.
What else did we learn today? Well to make sure you lock the all the exterior compartments before you set off and not leave the keys in the camper once you've put the top down. Ditto sunglasses. It's useful that one of us is small and subtle enough to crawl back though a half open door and avoid having to put the whole camper up again. It is also necessary to put the clip on the fridge door so it doesn't open whilst you're driving and emptying its' contents over the floor. Also all the drawers need to have all their locking buttons firmly pushed in!!
