We got to Magnetic Island and were collected from the boat by Sean and Kieran as they had hired a car for the day. We got checked into X Base and then had a lazy day. We were told that X Base was the only hostel to stay at on the island as unlike the others, it provides entertainment during the evening. Our first night we were expecting a bit of a mad one as we'd heard that it was basically a party place, unfortunately we'd just missed out as the night before was a big night so the staff couldn't be bothered to organise anything! Good job we can create our own fun! As well as meeting up with the Irish lads, we also met up with Calvin, Paolo and their friends so between us all we had a good laugh.
We spent 4 nights in total on Maggie and if we hadn't provided our own entertainment it would have been pretty boring. The one night the staff did arrange something was for a Bikini and Boardies party. We were sat in our dorm having a free sneaky drinks (you weren't allowed to have alcohol on the premises so we had to keep it quiet) when two guys came in and sat having a drink with us. We thought they were just coming into join the fun but it turned out they were the night managers, oops! Lucky for us they didn't confiscate our drinks, but there was a catch... we had to get involved in the bikini and boardies theme. We went out to the bar in the attire and were a bit surprised we were the only people who had dressed accordingly. It worked to our advantage though as we got three free bottles of champagne. Dani and Paolo also won a game where you had to make a clothes line in which the longest line won, so we also got a free jug of cocktail =) Despite the hostel being pretty full, we were the only people who really did anything that night, everyone else was sat down being boring, whilst we were all dancing on the tables and ended up in the sea (minus clothes).
The days went very slow, the hostel didn't provide anything to do; there was music by the bar but nothing near the pool. There was a notice up asking people if they wanted to play football against the locals one of the afternoons and as there wasn't much else to do (and by the second day we were pretty bored) we decided to go along to waste time. We thought it was organised by the hostel but it turned out it was by a local man who enjoyed playing football so much that he had made a pitch on his land and every fortnight would arrange a backpackers v locals match so he could play too. He provided soft drinks and beer as well which was lovely, shame the hostel couldn't take notice and actually support it by helping with refreshments or at least transport!
The football is also where we met 'Jimmy James da 3rd'. He is originally from New Zealand but moved over here years ago and was up from the Gold coast visiting his son, who was playing football. This guy was lovely but also a little crazy, but after speaking to him for a few hours he said that when we go down to the Gold Coast he'll take us out for a night as his friends own a few clubs down there which we thought was really nice. The day after meeting him he turned up at the hostel with snorkeling gear and offered to take us out for the day to some secluded beaches that his kids had told him about, we had a wkd day!
We also hired a topless car on one of the days and went exploring the island, well as much of it as we could. The majority of the island is National Park so only certain areas can be accessed. We got distracted on the way back at Magnums Hostel where we ended up in a hot tub drinking snakebite with some people =)
So although Maggie wasn't what we expected we still had fun. We met a girl called Judith in our dorm, so now we all set off for Airlie Beach and Whitsunday's =)
