I had chosen the boat "Spank me" as I thought it would be full of people that were really up for a laugh and I was right! The monsoon rain was horrendous and walking tp the harbour to catch my boat was terrible, i couldnt even see where I was going. One of the most expensive things you will do on the coast and it was about to be ruined by the weather. Everyone was in the same boat (excuse the pun) so we just got on with it. We were given the sexiest fisherman bright yellow rain macs and got on the boat.....my intial feelings were that this was going to be a long 3 days and nights. Anyways, make the most of it I thought to myself!
We all got on really well the crew were so funny. There were two guys puking on the way out not just cos of the big waves but also due to the fact that they were hung over so none of us had sympathy for them! The first night was pretty chilled as everyone was shattered so we all went to bed before midnight. The weather had been really bad all day but nothing could have prepared us for what hit us. The biggest storm swept across the whitsundays and I didnt think we were going to get out of there. Julie and I were sleeping right at the front by the crew which was located by the radio. All we could hear is all these skippers radio-ing MAY DAY MAY DAY. The boat was rocking ferociously and I didnt sleep a wink. We could hear everything our crew were saying and another boat came within 5 metres of hitting us. Our skipper had to go out in the middle of the night and save another boat he also had to move our boat in the pitch black in order that we didnt get smashed to pieces. We were informed that Airlie Beach was an absolute mess and so many coats had been smashed up and millions of dollars worth of damage had been done. A boat called "romance" had been pushed against the rocks, which was quite near to where we were. The boat was full of backpackers and they had to be airlifted to safety, many of them lost so many possessions and it was easy to see how lucky we had been.
When daylight came we were off sailing really early, the waves were HUGE but it was sooo much fun it was a bit of extreme sailing! We looked so hot in our yellow jackets! We arrived at a little cove which is where I was trying scuba diving. I was very apprehensive as the whole breathing under water thing was really scary but I loved it! As it was a trial dive it was only about 20 minutes long but i enjoyed it so much and there were so many colourful fish, although the visibility wasnt the best as the storms had churned things up alot. After scuba diving we chilled out and I lazed on the boat all afternoon, which was nice as the weather had picked up a bit. In the evening everyone was up for a laugh and we we ended up playing some funny drinking games.....there were so many lovely people on the boat it made the time fly by.
We were woken up really early as we were going to Whitehaven beach, it was amazing, we were so lucky that the sun shone for us as it wouldve broken my heart no seeing it in its glory, it was still abit cloudy but so much better than it had been. We then sailed to a nice cove where I decided to snorkel and it was amazing. Due to the weather being pretty good the night before the visibilty was good and I saw soo many fish. More chilling out on the boat and another fab evening, this time a lot more chilled and no more silly drinking games!
On the last night I slept on the deck as it was soo hot in the cabins, I slept there until about 5am and then it started peeing of rain!!!! It wasnt such an early morning on the last day but we were taken to hook island where we did a bush walk and the sploshed about in a fresh water fall which was lovely as we didnt have to wear our unattractive stinger suits! Unfortunately, after that it was the lsail back to Airlie Beach. On the way back we saw all the carnage of the boats that had been destroyed, i had never seen anything like it and we realised how lucky we had been.....
