Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world... This was a trip that i had been looking forward to ever since i had decided to come travelling. The further I got up the coast the more worried I was about the weather as 3 weeks ago the Island was closed due to a cyclone!! When I booked this trip in Sydney I decided to do the 3 day 2 night guided tour which is where you stay at the Kingfisher lodge and go around the island in a big 4wd bus instead of the little 4wd and the camping option. Some irish guys I met at my hostel in hervey bay called me a "flashbacker" as I wasnt going to rough it and i told them about how I would be getting afternoon tea and cake.
on the bus down to the harbour to catch the boat across to Fraser island i met a few girls that were going on the same tour. We didnt really know what to expect but it soon became clear how beautiful the scenery was going to be. The weather wasnt amazing but our tour guide told us that there was a lot of walking to do and he wasn't lying. There were 26 of us on the bus for the first two days and that reduced to 10 on the last day.
I thought that the guided tour was really good as i got to see and learn loadsa about the island. We visited the usual spots like Lake McKenzie, Lake Birrabean, Lake Waddy and the wreck of the Moheno or as i liked to call it..the mojito!
One of my favourite parts was when we went to Lake Waddy. The sun was shining and we had to make a short bush walk to the lake. We stayed there for a while and then had to walk across what looked like a desert, it was soooo hot I thought I was melting, I think that the most best pictures I have of fraser was from those few hours.
The nightlife at the "lodge" was rather interesting, one small pub which served all your food and then turned into a sort of club later on. You guys must be thinking that this lodge must be amazing but it was a hostel, so dont go thinking i've won the lottery or anything....i wish!
I had such a good time at Fraser Island but i wished that the weather was good for all 3 of the days...hey ho best working anyday!
After the trip it was back to Hervey bay for a few nights to recover...its not exactly the most happening place but myself and a couple of others went out for a curry and were most upset when it didnt even come close to the nice curries back home.....jeez i am sooo english sometimes!
