Day 42
Bungle Bungles - Kununurra
" Out where the river broke, the bloodwood and the desert oak...."
Today was pretty cruisy by our current standards but it was really just to get to Kununurra to set up a base for the next week or so.
We left the Bungles at about 8.30 after a quick walk down to the river that the kids found out on a run about the place. The park at the Bungles entrance is really handy but it's only in its infancy and so is very basic in its set up. They are guzzling 70 litres of diesel every night on the generator just to keep lighting and power to the place - and its not peak season yet! It can only get better though I guess.
We drove through some spectacular scenery to get here today - lots of mountain ranges and large bridge river crossings - some with lots of water and some with none at all.
Once we hit Kununurra it was all about arranging the next week. We shopped and fuelled and we will use this place as a base to explore the rest of WA.
We did do a quick drive to the Mirima National Park which is literally 5 mins from town and did a quick couple of walks - nothing to really report there though. We then did a loop drive out past all the irrigation plains that support the Kununurra industries - Sandalwood is their biggest product!!
We also drove out to Ivanhoe Crossing which was used in the movie "Australia" - shame it was closed to drive through - would have been fun!! Lots of Barramundi under the bridge - but lots of saltwater crocs too so not a place to swim as enticing as it looked!
It's going to be an epic finale to the WA leg of our trip over the next week and I won't give too much away as a result! Needless to say I suspect that there will be a number (if not all) of CMJs b*****ed by the end of it!!
It all starts tomorrow with an overnight trip out to El Questro. Yes we will leave the van and 4wd out to Home Valley first and the back to El Questro staying the night there. The countryside looks spectacular - it was where Baz filmed most of Australia and so I can't wait! The trip in there alone will be fun - it's back on the Gibb River Road for another 100 odd k's of rough track with lots of water crossings including the Pentecost River twice!
Most likely be offline for the next few days but will have lots of pics to post when we get back to Kununurra!
