Day 9
Sandstone - Mount Magnet - Payne's Find - Wubin
"Now I aint sayin she a gold digger ...."
Pretty relaxed day today . Left Sandstone at 8am and drove their 18k Heritage Trail that includes an underground and carved into the rock face Brewery from the turn of last century, a rock formation called London Bridge ( yes it is falling down!) and the State Battery ( crushes the rocks containing all the gold). The Battery was still in use until 1982.
On the way back towards Sandstone we saw a huge explosion just shy of the town. The thick black plumes indicated it was a fuel fire of some sort as a result (that Diesel fire is too unique). Cayla was very dissapointed that we didn't go check it out!
We drove onto Mount Magnet and saw the Hill 50 Gold operation. Cayden got to see his large mining trucks right up close as the road to the lookout was right in amongst the mine operation itself.
The road to Mount Magnet from Sandstone was the most laden with road kill on our trip to date. Some sections we had to slalom to avoid the carnage. Mostly goats and roos but some sections were a real mess!
From Magnet we drove to Payne's Find and had lunch at their working Battery ( closed today though) and then onto our bush campsite for tonight at the Jibberding Rock Nature Reserve 20 k's from Wubin.
Tomorrow we hit the WA Coast and beaches which will bring and end to the first leg of our trip.
Saw 15 wild goats today on our drive + 3 Wedgetail eagles.
