Day 14
Geralton - Lynton - Port Gregory - Kalbarri
" I've had enough, away
City times down, down
I've gotta go, Lord don't let me wait
Stay low cause I'm, I'm going up North again..."
Woke to nice sunrise colours in Geralton this morning - a nice change! Hit the road at 8am and headed North - destination Kalbarri.
Along the way we stopped in at Lynton which was foundered in 1853 as a convict hiring station. Sadly, mostly ruins remain but the owner of the farm (nice bloke too) has taken it upon himself to preserve this part of his local history including the old homestead that the Captain who emigrated from Britain had built using convict labour.
From there it was a short hop up the road to Port Gregory . There is absolutely nothing of interest in Port Gregory except for this rather large pink lake . It's pink because of the high levels of beta carotene which of course is being farmed now. Rather pungent smell too but looks nice!! There were interesting "saltified" things in the lake too like car tyres and sticks - all covered with pink infused salt . The beach was nice - has a 5k long reef just offshore which must make things interesting for the fishermen!
We drove into Kalbarri about Midday and just loved it from the first sight. You'd seriously thing we were in the middle of the desert with the way the rock formations are - but then there is the massive surf pounding against them constantly. We off loaded the caravan and had lunch and the spent the rest of the afternoon exploring all the bays and viewpoints just South of the town. Island Rock, Natural Bridge, Grandstand, Mushroom Rock, Pot Alley and Eagle Gorge. We did heaps of walking this afternoon - tired kids tonight! Lots more tomorrow too and with a swim as well . Hopefully the massive swell will have eased off that bit more!!
We watched a beautiful sunset tonight at Red Bluff and finished the night off with a flat BBQ lamb roast and beers.
More fun in the hotter sun tomorrow!!
