We've spent a lot of time on and around the water today. We started the day with a whale watching cruise around the coast of Perth and Rotttnest Island, as from September to November this area is known as Humpback Highway, and with good reason! It took around 30 minutes to get out to the area where the whales are normally seen, and for the next 3 hours or so we saw 4 or 5 different pods of whales of all ages! There were large males, females with calves and juveniles in groups and we had the privilege of watching them up close from the boat, it was absolutely amazing! They were swimming right up to the boat, so it felt like you could almost touch them! Inspite of their size they seemed really gentle, and moved so easily in the water, mainly just swimming but sometimes diving and we even saw one jumping out of the water in the distance! The crew also put a microphone in the water so we could hear the whales singing. It was such a great morning, and the crew said they don't normally see so many whales in one place at one time so we obviously picked the right day to go. On the way back to the harbour we also saw a pod of dolphins, and when the boat slowed down the were swimming in its wake so we had a really good close up view of them! After our cruise we continued with the underwater theme with a visit to AQWA (the Aquarium of Western Australia). This has exhibits showing all of the marine life that lives off the coast of WA, from the cold waters of the south up to the tropical waters of the north, so we saw a whole range of animals from small fish to turtles to sharks and even saltwater crocodiles! (Luckily these were very small and safely behind a glass display, which is the closest I ever want to get to one!). There was also an area where you could touch and pick up different animals, so we got to stroke some very small sharks, which felt like sandpaper, and pick up starfish and sea cucumbers, which are very slimy. To finish off the day we went back to Scarborough beach, near our hostel, and watched the sunset on what is known as Australia's Sunset Coast, and it did not disappoint! The sky turned beautiful shades of yellow/orange/red, a perfect end to a very lovely day in Oz.
